The U19 team went into todays Jackie Quinn Memorial Cup Tournament as defending Champions having won the inaugral running of the competition last year
The tounament, which is played on a knockout basis, featured the U19 teams from ththe AIT, Longford Town and Sligo Rovers.
Athlone's first game was against Sligo Rovers which was a tight game and ended in a 2-2 draw and penalties ensued. The Athlone lads proved to be the better marksmen and Darcy on form in the Athlone goal they won through to the final. Longford town beat the AIT to go through to the final as well.
The final was a typical midlands derby with no quater asked or given and in an exciting finish Athlone were leading 2-1 with just minutes to go. But Longford conjured up an equaliser and sent the final to penalties. However, just like the first game the Athlone lads were on form and hit the back of the net while Darcy kept them at bay and again they won out and delightedly lifted the Jackie Quinn Memorial for the second year in a row.
Congratulations lads!!
